This is going to be an incredible summer. In Tucson, where July easily reaches 110 degrees during the day, people reduce the roasting by wearing minimal amounts of clothing. This was problematic for me in previous years because I was always caught between wanting to hide my shameful body, and wanting to strip down to nearly nothing due to the heat. I've always suffered in silence while wearing more fabric than I needed to... but 2013 is where it allllllllllll changes. 2012 held an empowering moment where I ventured into the ocean in a fatkini... but at the time it terrified me to do so. This year, it's fear-free and on. To quote my babe of a friend Alison: "You ain't scared".
As I thrift, I've been collecting skin tight dresses, sheer blouses, lace shirts, "booty shorts", and skirts so short they show more than you'd believe. All of the things I love, none of the shame. This skirt is one of those mentioned above. It may not look tiny to you, but when you're a gal with curves all over, clothing tends to shorten the instant you move. So on days when I'm feeling demure, I'll wear shorts underneath. On the days I feel bawdy... well. Y'know.

I'm excited to tell you that you're going to be seeing a little more intentional style on The Militant Baker. Ever since I realized that fat clothing is powerful, political, and radically influential, I've been wanting to share more of what this body can rock. Thanks to a new job where I now get to consciously dress up (no more uniforms!), and a few exciting partnerships... well, just you wait. It's gonna be sexy.
Ever heard that "Summer In the City" song by Regina Spektor? She talks about what hot season fashion is all about, and it's my favorite thing to show off. April through September is great because it consists of miles and miles of...

Boobs! Or cleavage, if you're classy like that.
Prepare yourself. Summer is definitely coming.

ReplyDeleteI, too, have been looking forward to getting out in my skimpy summer threads :)
I can tell you're ready to rock everyone's socks off, and I can't wait to hear more about it!
I've yet to get tired of Regina Spektor.... after YEARS.
DeleteCan't wait to see your skimpy threads too!
Super cute outfit!
ReplyDeleteYour eyelashes look amazing. Thanks for being so positive. I am going to try and actually wear short sleeves this summer (wish me luck)

No luck, just do it! Rock it woman, I know you can. <3
DeleteYou look gorgeous dah-ling!
ReplyDeleteI made a similar decision while on vacation in the Dominican Republic a couple of weeks ago after the friend I was traveling with made a ridiculous comment about the strapless dress I was wearing because you know, "girls who look like me should wear stuff like that". I decided it no longer makes sense to be "uncomfortable" because of what someone else thinks when I think I look fabulous.
Fuck. Yeah.
DeleteYou look amazing, and the outfit is bangin.
ReplyDeleteYou look smashing in that outfit. I know we should not indulge in body-envy, but I wish I was as well-proportioned as you! x
ReplyDeleteOh Annika, I think you are just PERFECT! Really. I check you out all the time:)
ReplyDeleteYou look gorgeous! Can't wait to see the rest of your outfit posts!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! You look so awesome in the short skirt!! There's no way I could rock it like you. My booty would have it hiked up to the max in the back! HAHAHAHA!
ReplyDeleteI love the outfit! I'm super envious of your good weather. You're totally right, summer is a coming!! =D
ReplyDeleteYou are such a babe, and you are ROCKING that outfit. Awe-inspiring!
ReplyDeleteDamn! I want that outfit! You look great!
ReplyDeleteGirl, that outfit is kickin'. I love it. I thrifted 5 sundresses a few weeks ago and cannot WAIT until it's warm enough to wear them. A few summers ago I was acting how you described, suffering in t-shirts and skinny jeans with sandals because I thought I was too chunky for cute dresses. Then I found one or two that I loved and was like efffff that mentality, it's 90 degrees and I have no reason to give a shit what someone thinks of my thighs.
ReplyDeletestyle IS powerful and is definitely a tool in the kit towards radical growth. awesome post, you look beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYou look great, you are so beautiful! I can't wait to see what else you have up your sleeve (or lack there of, haha)!
ReplyDeleteI really needed this post today. I put on shorts for the first time and almost burst into tears. You look beautiful, and more importantly, you feel great. I'm going to try harder to dress for me. Thanks for being my inspiration.
ReplyDeleteYeah skirts are always little short down back, mostly in movement.

I think you look adorable!
ReplyDeleteYour smile is so warm and lovely! You look great here. I live in south Georgia where it can also be around 110 in the summer - as well as close to 100% humidity - and over time my attitude is moving more and more towards "This is comfortable in the heat, fuck what anyone thinks about how it looks". Thanks for being a leading voice for so many.
ReplyDeleteI just followed a link from FB.
ReplyDeleteI am immediately hooked to your blog. Yours is the first blog I'm officially following. I'm feeling better about myself already.
I want to nurture in myself what you are showing.
Thanks.
Let me know if I can shamelessly post my new blog - which is totally different but I'm proud to be doing.
LOVE YOU JES!
Love, love, love your style! Fun, funky and fearless--rawr, honey. Rawr ;) (Alliteration is fun, but seriously, you're fabulous.)
ReplyDelete#1 you look adorable.
ReplyDelete#2 It took me almost 45 years to realize that if I keep waiting for the day that I'll be perfect enough to do the things that I want to do, that day will never come. So kudos to you for figuring it out so much sooner than I did and kudos to me, ( I believe that's encouraged here :-) )for FINALLY figuring it out. Last July I wore a sleeveless dress to my sister's wedding. It was so unique and it fit me beautifully, I just couldn't pass it up. I was planning on wearing a cardigan (the trusty cardigan) but it was so humid, I just couldn't bear it. So I went without, and I got so many unsolicited compliments on how I looked. My BF posted a picture of me on his Facebook, and for the first time in my adult life, I wasn't ashamed. He thinks I'm beautiful, why can't I?
Jen
That is such a cute outfit! And I like how it's just the perfect length to show off your leg tattoos.
ReplyDeleteI love this skirt. You're rocking it!
ReplyDeleteI read this, and about halfway through "In the summertime" by Mungo Jerry started playing. I take that as a *big fat* yes from the universe! Higher powers are clearly praising your message. Consider me hooked :)
