PLUS SIZE STYLE ICON: MS. FRIZZLE

(via)

Plus Size Style Icon is a fashion series inspired by the kick-ass women we love in pop culture. They may or may not be plus size themselves but GUESS WHAT? You can wear their look no matter your size because plus women can rock whatever goddamn style they want. So rock it. ROCK IT HARD. If you missed the other Plus-Size Icon Posts... fix that! They include: Peggy CarterMiss Fisher (my favorite), Beth DittoFelicity Smoak (the Internet's favorite), Eloise, and Hilda the plus pin-up (P.S. This post contains affiliate links!)
-------------
I was a PBS kid through and through and the only thing I loved more than Mr. McFeely delivering VHS tapes about crayon factories was Ms. Frizzle yelling "Wahahahooo!" while wearing the most amazing dresses to ever grace television.

Oh, you TOO?!?! I'm not surprised.

Well, fellow fans, I'm not sure if you're aware... but there are FOUR seasons of The Magic School Bus on Netflix right now and if you're anything like me, those episodes are playing in the background while you work because there is NOTHING better than having your fav childhood show enhance life while you're busy adulting.

Ms. Frizzle understands better than anyone else that a bangin' outfit consists of three things: a themed dress covered in an overwhelming pattern, earrings you couldn't ignore if you tried and shoes that pull it all together. If you have a thermometer or food themed necklace... well, then you're just the kind of overachiever she would love.

Storm cloud earrings (They glow under a black light!)
Thermometer necklace (Yes, it totally works.)

"Painted" desert dress (for the Arizona field trip y'all need to come visit me on!)

The ultimate science dress (Your IQ increases every time you wear it!*)
*No, not really.

Unicorn dress (now THAT is a field trip I want to go on!)
Winged pink heels with hearts (OMFG these heels)

Vegetable gardening dress (God bless Phoebe and all her plant mayhem)

Other odds and ends you may or may not need in your life:

Cicadia earrings (I have 1000 real ones in my front yard right now)
Thermometer earrings
Another amazing galaxy dress (comes in all sizes)
School bus wristlet
CRYSTAL SET (grow 'em yourself!)
Liz (for every outfit of course!)

Buzzfeed made a comprehensive list of The Frizz's brilliance called "The Definitive Ranking of Ms. Frizzles Outfits" which should probably be required reading after all the killer ensembles I've gathered for you. God bless you Ms. Frizzle and the amazing shit you found while working on a teacher's salary.

Now, it's your turn to suggest the next style icon in this series! Penelope Garcia from Criminal Minds has been suggested and I'm diggin' the idea of compiling a post of outfits inspired by Gabourey Sidibe as Becky from Empire.

What are your requests? Lay 'em on me.

PLUS-SIZE STYLE ICON: PEGGY CARTER

Plus Size Style Icon is a fashion series inspired by kick-ass women we love in pop culture. They may or may not be plus size themselves but GUESS WHAT? You can wear their look no matter your size because plus women can rock whatever goddamn style they want. So rock it. ROCK IT HARD. If you missed the other Plus-Size Icon Posts... fix that! PEGGY CARTER IS BACK AND MY LIFE HAS MEANING AGAIN.

In case you somehow missed the best thing to happen to ABC (or hate/ignore Marvel shows- in which case, please reevaluate your life decisions immediately) Agent Carter is a show about a secret agent who works for the SSR (Strategic Science Reserve- not a real thing) and kicks ass in sexy shoes on the daily. She knows her worth, takes up space in a sexist "man's world", and doesn't take shit from anyone.

Swoon.

Because the show is set in 1946, Peggy is caught in historical fashion flux which... is kinda rad. Carter started working in the SSR during the war and at the time, rationing dictated the utilitarian garb she occasionally dons: simple skirts without pleats, low heels and zero frills. As the episodes continue though, we start to see the inclusion of postwar dresses and an emphasis on femininity, French fashion and flounce. Season 2? Flounce.

Blah, blah, summary: SO MANY AMAZING OUTFITS.

And yes, I know, I know. Peggy is not plus-sized, BUT that doesn't mean that fat chicks cant rock the 1940's just as hard as she does. If anything, the ensembles below (most go up to 4x and many to 5x) prove that YOU have the option to bring postwar glamour back like never before.

Go get 'em, ladies and gents.

Felt fedora: This is THE hat you need. Really.
Navy blazer: Not pinstriped; even better. Blue, white and nautical. Two of her looks in one!
Button down shirt: Basic is best.
Navy Skirt: The blazer's other (better?) half.

(If you're gonna commit to this shit, take a note from the leading lady and wear as much red, white and blue as possible. In honor of Captain America, obviously.)

Off-the-shoulder gown: A titch more wearable than Peggy's and just as gorgeous.
Gold heels:  Mid-height and strappy- all in the spirit of the decade.
Vintage rhinestone necklace and earrings: Rhinestone costume jewelry makes me feel things. Sexy things.
Besame lipstick in "1946": The actual factual lipstick worn in every episode. OWN IT.

Lattice Dress: Get your flounce on.
1940's Daisy Pins: Absolutely vintage. Absolutely precious.
Grey Pumps: Simple and classy AF.

Short sleeve blouse: Bring on the ruffles.
Trousers: Not pants. Trousers. Because we're fancy like that. (Up to 5x!)
Two-toned mid heels: There's no going wrong with this combo.

Tie-neck navy dress: Picture perfect. (Up to 5x)
Red plus-size belt: I own this and love it.
Vintage blue earrings: Keeping it simple and subtly sexy.
OPI polish in "Cinnamon Sweet": ALSO the actual color worn in every episode. Yr welcome.

Tie-neck blouse: The perfect feminine top.
Pencil skirt: Your challenge- rock a tight skirt as hard as she does. VBO and all.
Pearl earrings: So you can look like you have your shit together.
Emerald heels: Peggy wore these in blue throughout Season 1. Good enough for me.

Sexy red dress: AMAZING. (Up to 5x)
Vintage 1940's clip-ons: Ruby rhinestones, y'all.
Official SSR I.D. badge: Because everyone needs one. Obvs.

If you missed the other Plus-Size Icon Posts... fix that! They include: Miss Fisher (my favorite), Beth DittoFelicity Smoak (the Internet's favorite), Eloise, and Hilda the plus pin-up.

If ABC were to release all of season 2 at once (like Netflix so kindly does) I would be the happiest girl in the world. But I would also consequently be too "busy" to write this post and what a tragedy THAT would be.

So I suppose I'll count my blessings, watch them as they come out and dream of the perfect red lipstick in between. Who's with me?

PLUS-SIZE STYLE ICON: MISS FISHER

Plus Size Style Icon is a fashion series inspired by kick-ass women we love in pop culture. They may or may not be plus size themselves but GUESS WHAT? You can wear their look no matter your size because plus women can rock whatever goddamn style they want. So rock it. ROCK IT HARD. If you missed the other Plus-Size Icon Posts... fix that! In my perfect world, we would all get together on Google Hangouts with martinis (or cocoa if you prefer) and we would watch each episode of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries one by one until we ran out of episodes to watch. We would then write the producers Hurryupmakemorepleasekthx letters and then begin the marathon all over again.

Is this a thing we can do? I'm doing it already... just without y'all. I'd like it so much better if you were here.

Whatever we decide, I'm officially in love with Miss Phryne Fisher: the classiest woman detective to never live. She's a "modern woman" as they like to say with a cool head (and outrageously hot style) who solves murders by day and unapologetically takes in boudoir lovers at night. This woman has and does it all. Sigh.

I initially tried to resist Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. It looked hokey and a little too.. British murder mysteryish for my taste. Its certainly none of that and if you invest a few episodes, you too will find yourself in love with this woman who does not, but should, exist. Tl;dr: IF YOU WATCH THIS SHOW YOU WILL GET HOOKED. HARD. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Miss Fisher is certainly not plus-size herself, but I WANTED her style so I set out to hunt it down on the internet... with very low expectations. After all, I've always assumed that 1920s fashion was unattainable for the plus lady. Dear lord I was WRONG. So, so, SO wrong and happily so. I couldn't believe my eyes as I scrolled through pages and pages of dresses, wraps, shoes, and accessories made for all sizes... including fat girls.

THERE IS A GOD DOTTIE! YOU WERE RIGHT!

And so, dear readers, because I love you (and because I couldn't help myself) I've compiled INCREDIBLE outfits for you all inspired by Phryne herself. The clothing comes in a variety of sizes, but they're all available in plus sizes and some even go all the way up to 5x- which, for fast fashion is a feat! A flapper dress for you! And a flapper dress for you! A flapper dress for everyone!

I'm giddy knowing that there are so many fucking incredible 1920 clothing options for all sizes. It's honest to god, a dream come true for this fat girl. But know this- you're on your own to find a mother of pearl encrusted pistol. I'm not going to do all of the work here.

Beaded drop dress: Thank god we live in a word where this now comes in plus-size, amiright?
Plus garter and stockings: Where else is your knife going to go?
Drop earrings: The classic Phryne pair.
Lace evening shoes: Delicate and fierce. Miss Fisher in a nutshell.

Floor length gown: Holy shitballs. That's all I can think to say about this dress.
Faux Fur Stole: Faux fur, don't worry. Also available in black.
Draped headpiece: Rather reminiscent of Phryne's in the top photo, don't you think? It's also $7, so there's that.
Silver shoes: Gawd these are gorgeous. And a perfect match for the Holy Shitballs Dress.

Black and red lace dress: Which comes in all sizes up to 4x!
Red velvet heels: These look ridiculously comfortable and are outrageously babely. Nothing better than that.
Plus sized gloves: Fat girls know they need specially sized gloves. Hips and Curves has you covered.
Lace shawl: I aspire to wear a shawl like Miss Fisher wears a shawl. New life goals.

Black fringe dress: It's cut in classic flapper style, which means it's impossible to go wrong with.
Black pumps:  Unf. These.
Earrings: Art Nouveau all day every day.

Sheer kimono inspired jacket: From Torrid and gorgeous.
Blouse: Simple and stylish
Pants: Or, trousers if you'd rather. They're "customizable" and sizes include up to 5x!
Cloche hat: A vibrant blue to match your...
Blue heels!: I can't get enough of this color.

Two toned heels: I feel like you're required to dance if you wear these. I'm not entirely sure why.
Beaded shift dress: A vintage inspired piece for all you "modern women" wink wink.
Black wool cloche: For all-the-time wear
Drop earrings: The vintage pair to end all vintage pairs.

White lace dress: Please wear this while driving your motorcar so the scarf can blow behind you. Please. (Alt option)
Summer cloche hat: I didn't think I could love cloche hats more until I saw this asymmetrical one.
Sunglasses: The round ones were stylish long before John Lennon. These are also $6.
Tan T-strap heels: I just can't get enough of 1920s heels. Can't. Won't.

And, of course, a few bits and bobs that don't fit together anywhere else, but must be included in this list:

Black lace dress: This reminds me of the one pictured up top.
Black maxi dress: Comfortable and and 1920's stylish. Also up to size 5x.
Gold and silver dress: Coming soon. You can sign up to have them email you when it's available.
Simple black dress: Made for accessories of course!
MAC Ruby Woo lipstick: The best red out there.
Front facing red hat: She wears one. Maybe even this one (probably not, but it's gorgeous anyways).

Life. Is. Good.

Are you a Miss Fisher fan? I'm also of course in love with Dot. Perhaps a Dot post as well in the future? But most importantly, Miss Fisher Fans... WHAT AM I TO WATCH WHEN I FINISH THESE EPISODES?

I need your recommendations.
And quick... I'm running dangerously low.

PLUS SIZE STYLE ICON: BETH DITTO

Plus Size Style Icon is a fashion series inspired by kick-ass women we love in pop culture. They may or may not be plus size themselves but GUESS WHAT? You can wear their look no matter your size because plus women deserve to rock whatever goddamn style they want. So rock it. ROCK IT HARD. If you missed the other Plus-Size Icon Posts... fix that! They include: Ms. FrizzlePeggy CarterMiss Fisher (my favorite), Felicity Smoak (the Internet's favorite), Eloise, and Hilda the plus pin-up.

I'm as good at waiting to publish blog posts as I am at waiting to give people their Christmas presents on Christmas.

By which I mean: I'm fucking terrible at it.

I just posted the plus size closet of Felicity Smoak, and if I was a well behaved blogger, I'd wait to publish another Plus Size Style Icon post for a while. But we all know I'm not well behaved, now don't we?

I've loved Beth Ditto since she found me through a magazine spread in 2004 and I fell instantly in hearts with the woman's unapologetic, fierce, fat girl style. How many fucks does she give? Zero. She gives zero fucks. And THAT is my kinda gal.

Beth is the singer for the kick-ass band Gossip and describes herself as a "fat, feminist lesbian from Arkansas."  If I could sum up Beth's style in one word, it would be: FEROCIOUS.

And god knows I like ferocious.

She's taught me three things about the world of fashion: the tighter the better. The shinier the better. And the more middle-finger-to-convention the better. And girl, I believe all of it.

I've personally (and purposefully) accumulated a lot of tight, shiny, middle-finger-giving articles of clothing, and so I'm not entirely unfamiliar with where to find alternative edgy fat girl clothes. Two of my favorites that I'm happy to have at my internet fingertips include CandyStrike and Chubby Cartwheels. All hail the Sorry Not Sorry female!

With the help of those two sites and a few others (mmmm lingerie), I found a kajillion Beth Ditto approved (I'm assuming heavily here) fat girl outfits. Yes, these are ALL plus size, and they bring the mesh, bold print, and jumpsuits to YOU. Because every girl (and guy!) deserves access to these sorta things if they want them. Y'know?

1 // Mesh Bodysuit (You couldn't hide an apology in there if you tried)
2 // Black Lyna Strappy Wedges (Unf.)
3 // Liquid Mini Dress (Do me a favor and leave NOTHING to the imagination.)
4 // Sleeveless Diamond Print Dress (Bold prints for bold ladies.)
5 // Elf Liquid Eyeliner ($1 and I use it every day.)
6 // Flamingo Cat Eye Sunglasses (Hardcore.)
7 // Lace Corset in Plus Size (I'd wear this everywhere, no pasties needed.)
8 // Leather Eye Earrings (These rock my world.)
9 // Silver Glitter Dress (Shine, bitch. Shine.)
10 // Flying Burger People Eater Platforms (WTF, yes.)
11 // Silver Party Dress (ala her Marilyn Monroe dress. BTW, they do custom sizing for everything so it fits you.)
12 // Leopard Hot Pants (Own at least one pair of hot pants, I'm begging you.)
13 // Black Sequined Unicorn Heels (THESE ARE REAL.)
14 // Striped Jumpsuit (in 3x!!!)
15 // "Shark Bite" Sequin Dress (Cut outs and sequins.)
16 // Red Flame Heels (I'm not 100% sure, but I think that if you wear these, you instantly become a rock star.)
17 // Leopard Print Body Con Dress (Available in 2x and 3x! Oh yeah, and it's $20.)
18 // See-through Lace Crop Top (Beyond sexy.)
19 // Silver and Black Circus Skirt (Metallic and stripes FTW.)
20 // Falsies to End All Falsies (Don't do normal.)

And if for some reason, you're not familiar with Gossip, here's a personal fav:

Want that gold lipstick? You can have it for $6. Oh, and listen to Dime Store Diamond AND Your Mangled Heart while you're here. DO ITTTTTTT.

PLUS-SIZE STYLE ICON: FELICITY SMOAK

Plus Size Style Icon is a fashion series inspired by kick-ass women we love in pop culture. They may or may not be plus size themselves but GUESS WHAT? You can wear their look no matter your size because plus women deserve to rock whatever goddamn style they want. So rock it. ROCK IT HARD. If you missed the other Plus-Size Icon Posts... fix that! -------------

In my very early twenties, I worked at a quirky used bookstore called Bookmans where my life was as two dimensional, as well, a life could get. My goals were to look awesome, sound awesome, and to own enough awesome things so everyone else would know I was awesome too.

Pretty shallow.
Fun. But shallow.

This allowed for a lot of room for "complex" media. Music that took energy to decipher (I listened to the bands you've never heard of, so I could tell you that you've never heard of them and then explain to you why they were "life changing." I was THAT guy), books that tore your soul out and stomped them on the ground (or McSweeny's because: hipster), and documentaries that were so depressing you had to smoke a LOT of weed to enjoy them (you know what I'm talking about)... yeah. Those things.

BUT everything changed when I went into social services. My energy was zapped from giving it to everyone around me, my mental stamina was taxed at the end of the day from solving crises and all I wanted afterwards was... ANYTHING that didn't make me work to understand it. I started listening to pop music (I'm a Swifter; 21 year old me is horrified), reading popular books (like, Oprah's Book Club popular. Again, horrified) and watching action packed everything.

This post is about action packed everything. More specifically, action packed shows like: Agent Carter (watch it because it's really great), The Flash, Agents of Shield and most of all Arrow; but basically anything with a really predictable plot, basic characters, and enough production value that you don't notice the production value.

I love them.
Like love, love.

Two seasons into Arrow I found myself undistracted enough by the predictable plots and characters to notice one person's style which led to the following epiphany: Holy fuck. All I want to do is dress like Felicity Smoak.

Felicity Smoak is an MIT grad, IT extraordinaire, Hacker Goddess and... super geek chic lady. The polka dot blouses. The fuchsia lipstick. The kitschy sweaters. The cut out dresses. The platform heels. The only good one liners in the entire show... dear God, if you let me come back as one fictional character please let it be her.

While not plus-size herself, her style transcends the front row of department stores and belongs on all shapes and sizes.... but that can only happen if you look hard enough. So I looked hard enough. Anthropologie would have been the perfect one stop shop for all things Smoak, but because they don't necessarily cater to fat girls, I decided to hunt down Felicity inspired pieces myself on other websites... some available in straight sizes, but ALL available in PLUS.

She is SUCH a babe, and you are SO welcome.

1 // Blue Cut-Out Dress (Cut outs forever)
2 // Black/Brown Platform Sandals (Does any one else find these sexy as hell?)
3 // Polka Dot Blouse (Wear everywhere)
4 // Black Pencil Skirt (With everything)
5 // Heart Cardigan (Because: hearts, duh)
6 // Scarlet Lace Top (Sexy and "appropriate")
7 // Black Cut-Out Dress (OMG give me this)
8 // Plated Drop Earrings ($3!!!)
9 // Two Tone Glasses (Her exact ones)
10 // Sheer Black Top (I have it and I love it)
11 // Patterned Mini-Skirt (The size can say no, but the stretch always says yes)
12 // Block Color Black and White Print Dress (Her block dress was my favorite)
13 // Black, White, and Red "Profesh" Dress  (Classy. So fucking classy.)
14 // Blush Heels (SO darling.)
15 // Navy Skirt (With flair)
16 // Watercolor Cream Blouse (Reminiscent of this)
17// MAC Lipstick in Candy Yum Yum  (The color is perfection)
18 // Black Velvet Platform Heels (Inexpensive basics are the best basics.)

My favorite of them all being of course, the red white and black polka dot dress ensemble because... red white and black with polka dots, duh. But really, I dig 'em all.

I've done several other (equally random) Style Icon posts about Hilda the Pin-Up and Eloise (I'm the only 28 year old in the world that wants to dress like she's 6, apparently) and I'll be doing more as we go. Who would you like to see a plus size wardrobe of? Who's your fashion inspiration? Tell me and maybe I can work it in!

For now though, I gotta run. IT'S TIME TO START SEASON THREE!
