I did a mini self portrait series for an upcoming art show called "Excess" at Candy Strike.
Yes, I am covered in cake ingredients. Whipped cream frosting hair, chocolate ganache eyebrows, and sprinkles galore. I figured this would be an great (and excessive) exploration of the unpredictable and ridiculous baker that I am. If you're in Tucson, you should stop by on December 1st and see the kick ass framed pieces I'm showing. The frames themselves will be works of art.

If you want to do this yourself here are some tips:
(Hair) I made chocolate whipped cream with extra cocoa so that it was thicker and more sturdy on my head. Make any whipped cream recipe (heavy cream is next to the coffee creamer) with a cup of cocoa and a little less powdered sugar. You should use a stand mixer and whisk attachment if you have one, but I used a vintage hand mixer and it worked well. Comb your hair back tightly and secure. Use your hands to cover and rub a layer of whipped cream over the top of your hair to give the rest something to stick to. Start piping in the back, working your way forward making sure to finish the "bangs" last. (Eyes) I pinned a million ideas here and used a few as inspiration. I made sure to use lashes and lots of eyeliner as well as pulling the color underneath. (Eyebrows) Melt a handful of chocolate chips in the microwave for 15 seconds at a time while mixing with a fork in between. Once it starts to melt a little add a few tablespoons of warm milk and continue melting while mixing. Once its creamy and lump free, use an eyeliner brush to paint 'em in! (Sprinkles) I used eyelash glue and let it become tacky before pressing them on. WARNING! Hair burns quickly. Don't let your candles touch it! That means you shouldn't skimp on the whipped cream:) Good luck!

Heh! It was FUN! I had to race against time before the whipped cream melted and candles burned, but it still worked out! The whipped cream has extra cocoa so it will hold the shape more, and I just worked a bunch into my hair like gel beforehand. I used a piping bag and started in the back making giant rosettes ending in the front where I piped bangs! Of COURSE I frosted my own head:) I did everything, so I feel pretty satisfied;)
DeleteYay weird random photo shoots that don't really make a lot of sense!
