Hey Mike,
I know you've been flooded with mail regarding your comments on sizeism, but I wanted to take a second to write you about a project I've been working on.
As a preface: Your opinion isn't shocking; millions share the same sentiment. You've used your wealth and public platform to echo what many already say. However, it’s important you know that regardless of the numbers on your tax forms, your comments don't stop anyone from being who they are; the world is progressing in inclusive ways whether you deem it cool or not. The only thing you've done through your comments (about thin being beautiful and only offering XL and XXL in your stores for men) is reinforce the unoriginal concept that fat women are social failures, valueless, and undesirable. Your apology doesn't change this.
Well, actually, that's not all you have done. You have also created an incredible opportunity for social change.
Never in our culture do we see sexy photo shoots that pair short, fat, unconventional models with not short, not fat, professional models. To put it in your words: "unpopular kids" with "cool kids". It's socially acceptable for same to be paired with same, but never are contrasting bodies positively mixed in the world of advertisement. The juxtaposition of uncommonly paired bodies is visually jarring, and, even though I wish it didn’t, it causes viewers to feel uncomfortable. This is largely attributed to companies like yours that perpetuate the thought that fat women are not beautiful. This is inaccurate, but if someone were to look through your infamous catalog, they wouldn't believe me.
I've enclosed some images for your consideration. Please let me know what you think.
A note: I didn't take these pictures to show that the male model found me attractive, or that the photographer found me photogenic, or to prove that you're an ostentatious dick. Rather, I was inspired by the opportunity to show that I am secure in my skin and to flaunt this by using the controversial platform that you created. I challenge the separation of attractive and fat, and I assert that they are compatible regardless of what you believe. Not only do I know that I'm sexy, but I also have the confidence to pose nude in ways you don’t dare. You are more than welcome to prove me wrong by posing shirtless with a hot fat chick; it would thrill me to see such a shoot.
I'm sure you didn't intend for this to be the outcome, but in many ways you're kind of brilliant. Not only are you a marketing genius (brand exclusivity really is a profitable move) but you also accidentally created an opportunity to challenge our current social construct. My hope is that the combination of these contrasting bodies will someday be as ubiquitous as the socially accepted ideal.
Ever so sincerely,
Jes
P.S. If you would like to offer me a "substantial amount" to stop wearing your brand so my association won't "cause significant damage to your image", don't hesitate to email me. I respect you as a business man, and my agent and I would be happy to contribute in furthering your established success.
P.P.S. You should know your Large t-shirt comfortably fits a size 22. You might want to work on that.

  1. Absolutely brilliant. I've never quite noticed the "like with like" thing before, but now that you mentioned it, it is pretty prevalent. Stupidly so. I love the idea of more, I dunno, inclusive campaigning. A lot.

  13. I. F**king. LOVE. You. This is the best response I've seen to that douchebag - you are my hero!!! (And can I just say how HOT you are??? :-)

  14. Excellent pictures and letter! I have noticed that it's "like with like" unless it's a fat sloppy guy with a hot thin wife/girlfriend. Take "King of Queens" as an example. I am a chubby gal (confidently so) and my husband is hotter than hot - and loves my curves like crazy. Suck it, Jeffries. Oh, and your clothes kinda suck any way.

  15. So ballsy and right on! Kudos to you. Work it! :)

  16. Your work is filled with such intelligence and wit. Your platform of acceptance for all is so needed in today's world. You exude the courage it takes to step towards a better world, even through dark tunnels first. Thank you for that kind of leadership! Kim Peace

  18. This was fantastic! And being a big lady, I'm right there with you on so many levels. I also want to say that it is also forbidden in our culture to show same-same (fat-fat) pics (and to portray them as attractive and sexual) in the mainstream as well, and that I wouldn't want anyone to think that this project seeks some sort of unnecessary validation in the in the pairing of big woman with smaller man -- really, we're cool, either way, is what I'd like to say! I don't need a skinny man to find me attractive to love myself :)

Because acceptance goes all the different ways :)

Thank you again so much for your beauty and chutzpah and wit. Glad I found your blog!

I can find the proper fit no matter ehatbthe tag says and rock any style I like. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I want to post these all over my walls - I would legitimately buy a print or two of this series if you guys were to start offering them for sale (I know that's not at all your intention, to make profit off them at ALL, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't still buy them. hehe)

I, personally think EVERYONE is beautiful in their own way and I think everyone should see that! In short great job, love it!

  72. I dieted all my life, so severely that I ruined my body's ability to maintain a healthy weight until I had weight loss surgery. I did the surgery for health, NOT to be thin. I am now smaller, but still curvy. I didn't ever hate myself, but many around me made me miserable because of my weight. My husband of 30 years always loved me just the way I was (and am now). You seem to have your head in the right place and many who support you in speaking out against entities like A & F. Now that I can wear their clothes, I never will because I don't support assholes. I have one curvy daughter and 2 nieces with anorexia, I know where I want my lovely, curvy, gorgeous, sexy, special daughter to be... happy and healthy! Good for you!

  84. I love this post. I would have liked to see more chemistry in some of these shots though. I'm in no way a photographer, but my visceral reaction to most of these was that you were taking these photos for the express purpose of giving a big F-U to A&F (which is fine, I would just have loved to see more chemistry, connection, emotion between you and the male model). Thank you for staying vigilant in promoting positive body image for all women!

    1. She explains in her letter why the guy isn't fat. Basically because society thinks only the same can be together, ie only fat people can be paired with fat people. She wanted to show otherwise, and since she is the female model the male would be a visual contrast to her body type.

Why don't you stop caring what people think or say about your body if you're so comfortable in it.
And please stop spreading the idea that it's healthy to be unhealthy. sure you're beautiful in your own skin but that your own business. You doing all this jsut to prove the point that you are certainly sends the messages that your not at all comfy, for if you were..you wouldn't have taken such steps.
There's a difference between battling offensive advertising that portrays women in untrue and biased ways and being a proponent of being unhealthy and lazy.

I work a job that has me running all day long and my coworkers who are slim get worn out much faster than I do. What you stated in the above comment is a total load of B.S. and you should be ashamed of yourself. She is beautiful and has proven it perfectly. It's people like you who make us feel we have to prove worthy when we are beautiful as is and there is nothing wrong with us. SHAME ON YOU FOR BEING A SHALLOW JERK!

  115. There's a difference between having curves and being morbidly obese. I would say your health and appearance doesn't affect me (I don't go up to obese people and mock them) but it puts a strain on the healthcare system.

Most of my immediate family is obese/overweight and I know I don't have a great metabolism which is why I go to the gym and watch what I eat. There are days where I really want that slice of pizza before bed or don't want to get up at 6am to hit the gym before work but that's what happens when society becomes more sedentary.

My brother on the other hand cost the taxpayers $16k because he wanted to take the easy way out and get a stomach band. It wasn't genetic, he just wanted to get McDonalds for dinner and eat a pint of ice cream while watching TV when he got home from work.

And the Abercrombie wasn't smart when he said what he said from a business standpoint. Why go out of a way to attack a group when it doesn't help your business? But you don't even have a fat guy model with you. And I'm really trying my best to not attack you personally but 90%+ of honest men would not find you attractive. Rolls, stretch marks and cellulite are not attractive. Same thing goes for men.

  142. I'm pretty certain Jeffries is not a marketing genius. I mean, who would get caught in A & F clothing? Wearing it would imply that you're a selfish, shallow, insensitive person! I hope they crash and burn. Their time is over. It is your time now.

  151. You go - PS larges tend to fit us tall fat women too, not that I'd wear their clothes, its not my style. But yes, fat can be beautiful, and I didn't find your images jarring - maybe at my age I've gotten secure in my skin too.

  153. Why if your so pro fat do you have a thin good looking guy as your model, where is the fat guy to be your model in the pictures

  154. Brilliant letter! Every bit as cutting and clever as Chris Kluwe's letter to Emmett C. Burns, Jr. I love it when arrogant assholes are put in their place by words so well arranged on a page.

And the photos? You are the embodiment of not just attractive and fat - BEAUTIFUL and fat. Gorgeous!

    Best,
    Ruby

  163. Beautiful, eloquent, social commentary. How amazing would it be if this was the starting point for a new revolution that challenges the beauty status quo.

  164. Thank you so much! The video of the guy giving thrifted A&F clothes to homeless people really pissed me off. I felt like he was making them the butt of the joke.
I told a friend it would be so much better if fat chicks *chose* to wear the thrifted items and was going to go out looking. You beat me to it and did it better than I ever could have.
You so rock. Please keep it up.

  168. I was fat in high school and then I worked hard and lost weight. I'm much happier and healthier and I feel like THIS is the person I was designed to me. 60 years ago it would have been rare to find somebody this obese, and now it's the norm. Makes me sad.

  169. You are beautiful and amazing! And to those who posted negative all I can say to you is bite me. I am plus size and I have a bf who has been with me for over 5 years now and he finds me beautiful as is. I don't need your approval on if my appearance is attractive. I am beautiful and sexy and if you can see it then you are shallow. Heavy doesn't make me unhealthy. And 6 am trip to a gym to stay fit is hard when you have a family to care for. You can 6 am gym run because apparently you are either single or childless. I on the other hand am not single and I have a 4 year old to boot. So think before you make assumptions. It's people like you that make girls starve themselves to fit in. BEAUTIFUL comes I all shapes and sizes you are just too shallow to see it. Shame on you!
