The title a little much? Nah.
This skirt and I managed to make it onto xoJane and now everyone keeps asking how they can also cover their thighs with religious iconography. I'll do you one better: I'll tell you how you can cover your thighs with religious iconography for free. First, a story:
I have incredible friends. Probably more incredible than yours. Sorry I'm not sorry. The photo shoot used for this post (and to give my page a face lift) was a joint effort of the incredibly talented photographer Liora, magical makeup artist Jessica, and plus-size designer Liz. Yes, I'm friends with rock stars.
Liz really is quite the kick ass bitch and the person who single handedly kick started my body love journey. Years (and years) ago, Liz was the only one designing fatshion for the runway in Tucson. After she asked me to walk for her... well, my life has never been the same. She has now opened an exclusively plus-size boutique (that hosts female artists and kitschy jewelry too!) and is launching her online shop on June 1st. Oh, and she runs a body positive book club complete with booze.
God. I wanna be (maybe on?) her.
AND she's giving away a Guadalupe skirt (in the winners size) so you can own a little sexy holiness yourself.
All you need to do to get your name in the kick ass lottery is "like" CandyStrike's Facebook page. Leave a comment letting me know you did AND what kind of top you would wear with the skirt if you won. I wore the sheer black crop top pictured above, but I'd love to hear what you would come up with!
Comment away, and make sure you leave an email address that I can reach you at!
(These are optional, so feel free to do as many or as little as you like. Be sure to leave a separate comment for each one!)

Congrats Jocelyn! Liz will email you soon!
Oh man I think I'm in love with your outfit!

I liked Candystrike on facebook. I think that would be rocking with a corset top. Since, I currently don't have one anymore... I'd probably wear it with a really bright blouse. I have a coral-ish sleeveless, cowl neck one that would go perrrrfect.
ReplyDeleteI followed Candystrike on Twitter. I'm going to need a good pair of black heels to go with it too...
ReplyDeleteI signed up for their mailing list too.
ReplyDeleteLIKED it!! And I have an adorable halter top that I bravely rock that I'd pair up w/that skirt in a heart beat!! <3
ReplyDeleteUm. While I'm only allowed to "like" the CandyStrike page (and I did, by the way), I LOVE this skirt. Holy shit.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, if it were legal, I probably wouldn't wear a shirt at all. Because it would only take away from the awesomeness that is this skirt. But...because I have to, I would probably wear it with a sweet retro men's black ruffle-y tuxedo shirt I have. Yay!
Thanks for the great post! I love the items in the CandyStrike shop!
Hi Jes! I love this skirt. I already 'liked' CandyStrike's page yesterday (or earlier today?) after I saw you in this skirt. If I had this skirt I'd wear it with a sleeveless shirt that goes up to the neck like a turtleneck with black ruffles all across it going horizontally. Hopefully I can find one like that. padillaizm at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteFollowed on bloglovin too. ;-)

ReplyDeleteI did the like thing...I would wear this with a black low-cut silk tshirt, black tights, and either black or red boots.
ReplyDeleteJES! HOLY CRAP! That top is SO SEXY! I always wanted to wear shear like that and was afraid to try it...but it looks FAN-FLIPPING-TASTIC! The skirt, the shoes, the red flower. You are so gorgeous! My hero! DAMN! I need to get the courage to wear clothes like that, because it looks GREAT. I thought I needed to wear clothes to cover up, but I was wrong. You look hotter than those too thin, boobless, assless models. Bringing back Marilyn Monroe and the curves. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!! xo
ReplyDeleteI liked candy strike on facebook. This skirt would go perfectly with my glittery gold tank top!
ReplyDeleteLiked the candy strike fb page. I would wear wear a white top covered in a bright rose print to go along with the legend of Guadalupe...or maybe a gold sequin top. as a woman who wears earth tones almost exclusively....that is saying a lot... Anita dot Gracia dotlewisatgmail

ReplyDeleteLiked the page on FB! I would need to go buy a new top just for this skirt...thinking of a gold top.
ReplyDeleteOhhh I'd love to have the guts to wear this with a corset top, but I'd probably go with a plain black tank and a cropped leather jacket. Hot!
ReplyDeletePage liked, enthusiastically. I think I'd wear it with my (only mildly obnoxious) pink heart sweater, collared shirt with the pluses poking out, sheer black hose, and combat boots. This would be such a fun skirt to play with, I mean fo' real.
ReplyDeleteAlso following her blog...

ReplyDeletepretty amazing!! i'd love to wear that skirt to a church
ReplyDeleteI've been a friend of Lizzie's for a long time & love her clothes. She's the hardest-working lady in fashion, I swear! I'd wear this with a black Brando tank & red kitten heels with matching lipstick when it's warm, and with my black fisherman's sweater, aqua tights and Frye engineer boots when it's cool. And it's ALWAYS COOL.
ReplyDeleteOkay so I liked the page before even knowing this was going to happen. That has to count for something! The beauty of the skirt is the dress up dress down appeal. I can see myself wearing it with a cotton black V-neck tee(short sleeved so my Tatts show), gold aviators , full blown out Afro or a black drappy type top, dangle gold something earrings with my hair in an updo with a Pomp,a gold flower in my hair with black pointed toe flats!

ReplyDeleteYou look gorgeous! I have been obsessed with Guadalupe for a few years now, and would LOVE to win this skirt. The top you chose is perfect. So sexy! ReplyDeleteI've been obsessed with Guadalupe for a few years, so when I saw this skirt, I squeed! Went over and liked CandyStrike and signed up for the newsletter. I think I'd wear a gold top with turquoise beadwork edging. Or maybe I'd wear the skirt itself as a top! Whatever the case, I must have it!
ReplyDeleteLove that skirt! I liked the page. I would wear the skirt with a flowy black top and probably a rosary for a necklace. I can be reached at suzernathy@hotmail.com. Thanks, and best of luck to you!

ReplyDeleteFacebook page liked and signed up for the newsletter! I have a fabulous black sheer shirt with shoulder cut-outs (all the better to show off my work-in-progress sleeve!), that I wear unbuttoned quite low with a cleavage flaunting cami underneath. I'd finish off with a mass of long jet beads and small gold cross. I'm a size 18 in Australia which I think is a 12 in the US. My email is faerieofglam@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, I've only just discovered your blog today and I am huge fan already - keep up the great work!
I "liked" Candys FB page. I would totally wear this awesome skirt with maybe a red shear top over a black tank, or a gold sequinned sweater.

ReplyDeleteI liked Jessica's ARKANEstudio's Facebook :)
ReplyDeleteOh my god Jes, you look so hot!!
ReplyDeleteI've always been a sucker for religious christian iconography (the gaudier, the better) which has always been a bit of a struggle, growing up Jewish and all, hahaha. But hey, I like what I like, and until someone makes a fabulous burning bush (oh shit, there's a good joke in there as a redhead) skirt, I'm all about the Mother Mary.
Anyhow, entry stuff:
I liked Candy Strike on Facebook. I dig their stuff, man. May take a bit of alterations, but I dig them hard.
As for what I would wear with this, I think this skirt calls for this amazing top I have, somewhere at my fathers house, in a box, a remnant from my uber goth days. Black spandex, long sleeves with slits cut through them, and a big ol' cowl-neck. It's tight as hell, and tight as hell. I haven't had the confidence to wear it in too long, and that's something I'd like to change.
Also can I just say how incredibly fucking proud I am of you, and how awesome it is to see your efforts be noticed, and the message of self love be spread? It makes me so happy. Like, so, SO happy. Love you, lady. Thanks for reminding us all how strong we are!
--Erin
That skirt is awesome, but I really love your shirt. It takes real balls to wear see through clothes and get a bunch of stares. Respect.
ReplyDeleteI would pair it with a low cut black top, so when I am on my knees, taking communion, the priest can look down my shirt, as I take down his wafer :) Was that too much?
ReplyDeleteI just found you and I love you!! The skirt is Amazeballs!!I would wear it with a Red sheer blouse.
ReplyDeleteYou have a new fan in me...I love your style!! I cant wait till the site is ready and I can get some shopping done!!Following you on here and Facebook!
ReplyDeletei would wear this with a sexy silver sequined shirt i've been dreaming of wearing but haven't because i never had anything to give me confidence enough to-but now that i am escaping an abusive marriage and spreading my wings-bring it on ;) gnggoetz@aol.com
ReplyDeletealso liked pages on FB, and joined lists with a huge smile-you all are awesome
DeleteThat skirt is stunning! I love it. :)
ReplyDeleteLiked! And probably chambray. I'm finding that I can pair everything with the chambray button down. It's nothing overtly sexy but it works for me.
ReplyDeleteI love this look! Liked the shop on FB, and I would wear a shiny (maybe sequined) tank. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteare friends exempt from this giveaway??
ReplyDeletei "like"all these things and fucking LOVE all you ladies! and, if i haven't said it before, girl you look fucking hot! but you always do to me <3

ReplyDeleteI am already a fan of Liz, Candystrike and you! If I won the fabulous skirt, I would pair it with a black off the shoulder shimmery shirt, fishnet stockings and bright red shoes!! :)
ReplyDeleteI have a sheer red chiffon button up that I would wear with it. Tucked in, black bra exposed and a sky-high black pump. Still deciding on tights... either way, I will be wearing it and wishing I looked half as fabulous as you do in it. Rock that skirt babe!
ReplyDeleteHi, i just found your blog!
ReplyDeleteI love it and i love the skirt!

OMG OMG OMG OMG!! I love this skirt!! I would wear it with a red lacy cami and red pumps!!
ReplyDeleteI love that skirt. I've written off The Church, but damn if the iconography doesn't still work on me. I'd wear it with a hot pink undershirt, hip-length black sweater and gold sparkly slingback wedges. Plus BIG gold hoops.
ReplyDeleteI liked the CandyStrike & Liora K Photography & am now following CandyStrike on Twitter.
Loving the skirt and your blog! Rock on girl!
ReplyDeleteLiked the FB page.
I would wear the skirt with a black knitted sweater, since I live in cold Tromsø in Norway!
Liked it and would ideally wear a gold lame or black fringe halter top, but in my own collection my effin sequin top! A group of friends shared this to me and I am in love. If I don't win, I will cry. A lot. And I have a puss in boots face. It's heartbreaking really.
ReplyDeleteLiked it. Ideally, I would pair it with either a gold lame or black fringe (think shimmy shimmy) halter top or my awesome effin black sequin top. Or maybe I'd wear JUST THE SKIRT. Several friends referenced this to me and I LOVE this skirt dearly. I'll probably cry a lot when I don't win it. Like A LOT. Which is even more tragic because I get puss in boots face when I cry.
ReplyDeleteJes, you look gorgeous in these pictures! But I feel really uncomfortable about the use of a religious/cultural symbol as a fashion statement. I wrote a bit more about my feelings here.
ReplyDeleteLOVED the skirt! Probably would wear it with a gold sequined tank top! Killer!
ReplyDeleteOHMAGAWDS...I just found both your page AND CandyStrike today and I am in LOVE!!! I would rock that skirt with my favorite shirt- it is ribknit, 3/4 sleeve, almost off the shoulder and slinky as hell. I wore it the day I met my super-favorite rockstar and now it's my lucky shirt. I hope you keep writing because positive women need to spread the word. I am hooked. :)
ReplyDeleteCatholicism is like Paganism with guilt.
ReplyDeleteI'm not down with guilt, but I'm always down with a bit of goddess worship in whatever form she may be!
Anyway, I likededed the fb page, and I'd wear a form-fitting black tshirt blouse type thing with a really cute split collar.
haha!! I completely love your outfit. It is just AMAZING!
ReplyDeleteOMG that skirt is AWESOME!! I liked the page on FB. If I had this skirt I would wear it with a gauzy TURQUOISE shirt and a black cami. Just cos I love turquoise. ANNNND I am totally in LOVE with your blog! I really needed it! You rock!
ReplyDeleteThat skirt is so kick ass! In loveeee! Ok, you ready for this: I followed "Your Life in Design" on BlogLoving, liked Candy Strike, Liora K photography, and ARKANE Studio on FB, and followed Candy Strike on Twitter. I am not so patiently waiting for the new Candy Strike website to open too!
ReplyDeleteWhat I would wear...well, I have this killer pair of Candies mile high leopard print peep toe shoes and a plain black tee with ruffled sleeves calling the skirt- accents with red toe and nail polish and rocking red earrings.
Love you Jes!
I liked Candy Strike's fb page! And, I think I would pair it with a hot pink top - maybe a tank top, maybe a crop top, who knows, but it seems like it's begging for some vivid pink, right? Just me? Ok :)
ReplyDeleteIconography I can wear! Awesome! I liked the FB page and joined the mailing list. I would probably wear it with that same black top or maybe a gold colored tank top. I just found this blog, and it exactly what I needed to find! Thanks so much for putting it out there!

ReplyDeleteSuch an awesome skirt! I'd wear it with this powder blue vintage lace front crop shirt I already own. It's got a great exposed zipper in the back. Oh, and a blood red lipstick!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this! so so much! I would probably wear a pretty plain hot pink shirt and lots of bangles... or maybe orange? either way this is amazing! I love it almost as much as I love your blog... x
ReplyDeleteHey There!
ReplyDeleteI liked Candy Strikes F/B page and they have some amazing stuff.
Also I would probably end up wearing a Forgotten Rebels tee shirt (old Hamilton, Ontario Punk Band) I have had for years with cat off sleeves.

OH MY GAWD. I LOVEZ IT. I would pair it with my gold and black off the shoulder top and a pair of fire engine red heels. I liked on fb and my email is rocknmargarita@yahoo.com btw.
ReplyDeleteI've only been reading your blog for a short while but I am happy, happy, happy that I found it! Okay, I have liked the Candy Strikes FB page. As to what I would wear with the oh-so-fabulous Guadalupe skirt? I'm thinking something red. I think this skirt deserves a new top and new heels!
ReplyDeleteI liked the Candy Strike FB page. I have a cute little cap sleeved black pleplum top that I'd wear with the skirt!
ReplyDeleteSo liked. Further, i'd wear it with a sheer top and a LIME GREEN or BRIGHT PINK BRA. s'right. rockin' it there. (email chris.s.davies (at) gmail ..bonus points, professional queer pastor. rockin' iconography as much as possible!
ReplyDeleteI just liked it! I would wear a black corset, tank, my voodoo glow skulls shirt or something black that shimmers ^_^
ReplyDeleteTotally liked it. I think this skirt would look amazing with a bright red tank top, personally. That's what I would wear with it.
ReplyDeleteI liked it! I would honestly probably wear it with my black nursing tank (breastfeeding a baby all up in here) with a sheer tank over it and a little gold knit shrug. And red jelly sandals.
ReplyDeleteI liked the page! I'd wear the skirt high-waisted with a simple black lace trimmed spaghetti strapped cami tucked under it so that focus of my outfit is on the skirt.
ReplyDeleteLiked the page! I'd wear the skirt high waisted over a simple black lace trimmed cami so that focus of my outfit was on the skirt. :)

ReplyDeleteBoth my girlfriend and I liked the Candy Strike FB page and were happy to do so! My GF (of ten years... almost wife...)saw you in the skirt above and the first thing out of her mouth is:
ReplyDelete"Honey! I want to wear shit like that!!" (Me too!)
We both envision wearing this skirt with a dark metallic gold camisole, fishnets, and this awesome pair of pirate boots she thrifted.
I like! And I would wear the skirt with a plain, loose, silky top.
ReplyDeleteI liked the Candy Strike FB page!
ReplyDeleteIf I were to win, I'd wear the skirt with my sheer black lace button-up sleeveless blouse :)

ReplyDeleteFollowing Liz via Blog Lovin'. You look AMAZING in that skirt. I'd love it to rock my Mexican pride and add something unique and meaningful to the wardrobe :)
ReplyDeleteI have liked CandyStrikes page and with that fabulous print skirt I would pair it with a black top with a gold embellished neck line to pair it with the foil gold in the skirt <3 It would look fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI have liked CandyStrikes page and with that fabulous print skirt I would pair it with a black top with a gold embellished neck line to pair it with the foil gold in the skirt <3 It would look fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI liked CandyStrikes page and tbh with that fabulous skirt, I'd pair it with a sleeveless black figure hugging shirt with a gold embellished neckline (Torrid has the perfect one IMO) to pair with the foil gold in the skirt! It would look AMAZING!
ReplyDeleteLove this skirt! I just liked Candy Strike on facebook.
ReplyDeleteAnd I also liked Candy Strike on facebook. I'd probably pair this with a red cami and a black blazer and maybe gold heels? Or black chucks.
ReplyDeleteAnd I started following Candy Strike on twitter too :)
ReplyDeleteThe skirt isn't really my style, but damn girl you are rocking that outfit! Absolutely stunning :)
ReplyDeleteI wish there was a LOVE option on facebook, but Like will have to do for now ;) I would wear it with a red sleeveless top tucked in with black heels! I LOVE the gold in the skirt, it is fantastic!!!
ReplyDeleteI like Candy Strike's Page! I would wear a hoodie with it - dress it down and make it casual :)
ReplyDeleteI liked CandyStrike on FB, and I'm super psyched to check out their brick-and-mortar store, since I'm moving to Tucson in a few months! I'd wear the skirt with layered red-and-white rib-knit tanks and my red, rounded-toe kitten heels. Or a turquoise tank and pink tights, since I love a bit of color with my iconography.
ReplyDeleteI love all-things-Mary, and would LOVE that darling skirt! I have a black studded tee that's sheer across the chest & shoulders, but also love Lily's Mommy's idea of red. So many options!!
ReplyDeleteI liked (because I truly do) all of the above. This skirt is fantastic. It reminds me of my friend's tattoos. She had a Guadalupe on one leg and a zombie Guadalupe on the other leg. One leg was always about life with a matching tattoo of death on the other.
ReplyDeleteAs for what I would pair it with: I am not fashion savvy. I usually throw things together that usually don't match and call it a day. The first thing that came to mind with this was a bathing suit I own that I use as a body suit. It is a leopard print halter one piece (Bettie Page style) that has a sweetheart type neckline. I don't know if it would work or not, but I would definitely try.
I am loving this Skirt! Great Giveaway! I would wear either a Mossimo Tank top from Target or a Black and Gold Sequin Top that I have in my closet.

ReplyDeleteI liked the page and I would def wear it with a studded black racer back tank. Maybe with a lace cropped tee over that. It looks like such a fun piece, I can think of lots of options.
ReplyDeleteI liked it and I would wear the hell out of that skirt! First impulse is a black racer back tank with a lace crop top over it. The options are endless, I'm always looking for a reaso to squeeze my booty into some fishnets and wear "inappropriate" amounts of tight or sheer stuffs. Maybe even some gold
ReplyDeleteI would wear it with my favourite boat necked shirt. Would look amazing!!!

THIS SKIRT IS FUCKING GORGEOUS! I need it in my life. I am 21 years old and finally am starting to love my body, thanks to people like you showing me the way! I love what you do and am so grateful - being fashionable and looking sexy is something I can achieve! I never believed that before so I just wanted to thank you. I would wear this skirt with a lace black top tucked in, black tights and some sexy black booties. I liked candy strikes page and really hope I win!

I bet it would look good with one of those bras that have the gold studs all over them too
I liked that page, yo. Honestly I would wear as little as possible with that skirt. I sexy black bra would be the maximum. michelle.k.leahy@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI liked CandyStrike's page, and will be hitting it up like mad once the online store is functioning! I have a black tank that is ruffle-y, stretchy, and has a lace design (like a rose) on the front...that and a red jacket and some form of rad heels.
ReplyDeleteI will be hitting up CandyStrike often! I like the FB page as well. I've got this funky tank that is stretchy and covered in ruffles except for a lace design (like a rose) on the front/boobies, I would pair it with the skirt and some rad-tastic heels.
ReplyDelete
