Mmmmmmmm the smell of vintage cloth, the sound of metal hangers being sorted on the rack, housewares being picked up and then carelessly clunked back down, the slight adrenaline rush I get from "the hunt"... I love it so.
Tucson's south side houses a large Spanish speaking community, the best Mexican food in Arizona, and the my favorite "actual" thrift stores in town. I stumbled upon a few stellar finds including clothing, vintage photos and a book I was dreaming about: "The Age of Faith" by Will Durant. It's one volume in a loooooong series about the history of civilization. It's an effortless read with only 1086 pages to tackle. Yeah, it's over a thousand and is more than 3 inches thick. Good god! I was just saying that I wanted to find a complete and unbiased history about the beginnings of religion though... and there it was in all its $3.50 glory. Win. I also found an incredible collection of 50's/60's/70's photographs from TUCSON that I want to do an entire post about... they're that awesome.
Any thrifting finds you want to share with the world? Link me!
i took a women and spirituality course in college (which was AMAZING) and some of the texts we used that i really liked were this one:

and
http://www.amazon.com/Women-Religious-Traditions-Leona-Anderson/dp/0195417542/
they are both pretty dense and scholarly but i'm pretty sure you are into that! we also used the new oxford annotated standard bible for our study of christianity. it is pretty great and annotated to hell. they actually don't sell it at a lot of christian bookstores because it is more a textbook than a spiritual book. i loved the class because we treated all religion as true, even things like greek mythology. man, i wish you lived close to me. i have no one to talk to feminist theory about, no one i know is interested.
RAE, I totally thought of you with this post... what with the thrift finds and feminism and all:)

DeleteIf you wanted to buy me that typewriter I totally wouldn't mind. If you wanted to ship it all the way to me as well, I would marry you. Tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteMmmmmm, how about I just BRING it to you...?
DeleteI was supposed to be born in Australia, btw.

Bringing it to me works too. You can help me move house! I will cook for you...
DeleteAustralia kicks ass. Almost being born here means you kick ass too. Like me!
I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have to get that book. In order to understand what the hell is happening now, you have to understand the beginning.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'll get my dad to read it too! ;D
Oh wow, everything here is so pretty :) loves xox
