THE MILITANT BAKER'S ARIZONA ADVENTURES: METEOR CRATER/HOLBROOK/PETRIFIED FOREST

I'm diggin' my state right now. I drove all day, stopping only for natural/national monuments and hamburgers. I really enjoyed going to the Meteor Crater... it was one of those things that if I wasn't driving past it, I wouldn't have given it a second thought. I was totally enthralled by the fact that a 150 ft piece of iron/nickel hit the ground at 26,000 mph and left a 4,000 ft hole. The tour guide was great, I touched a rock that was 50,000 years old, and pictures will never do it justice. Kind of had to be there. The end.

Holbrook is on Route 66, and is kitschy as all get out. I could have stopped for pictures every 100 ft, but I had shit to do!

As for the Petrified Forest... well, I may or may not have pounded my steering wheel and yelled "Noooooooooo!" when I realized that I had to go all 30 miles through the park to get out. It was that terrible. I'm probably just a spoiled desert brat, but I kind of felt like I paid $10 to drive on an Arizona highway. Yay cool old rocks. Can I go now?

Proof that I saw rocks. Old rocks. With layers. Moving on.

I'm off to the old hotel downtown in Flagstaff for some Sunday night drinks and conversation. I'm driving home tomorrow... and I'm a little sad that I'm going to have to be with people again. Just kidding. I'm mostly excited to see my kitties. I miss them like only a crazy cat lady would.

  2. The geologist in me is so giddy right now! How cool to see all of the layers of history!!

And speaking of history, did you time travel or something 'cause it seriously looks like you're in the past. Too cool!

  3. I adore all the photos you've been posting of your trip lately. As an anthropologist, I'm super jealous of your visit to Montezuma Castle, and now the geologist in me wishes I was at the meteor crater! Looks like I have a trip to Arizona in my future (:

  5. Oh the mind wash-- I saw those wigwams and thought immediately of Pixar's Cars... Anyways, this is an awesome little place to go to. I really need to get around my area more and find places like these. There was that one nationally preserved cave once but I think two years ago voids it. Hope to see more unique places! Keep traveling!
