A LOVE LETTER TO MY MOTHER

Dear Mom,

I'm not sure I can put into words how much I love you, but I'll try.

I know I've done a lot of the hard work in my life, but I would be remiss to not mention that a lot of my success is because of you. My entire life, you have instilled in me the belief that I can do anything I want. Any dream, no matter how great is achievable, and because of this I know the sky is the limit. I am well aware that you are my biggest cheerleader and fan; the feeling is mutual.

I hope you know that I realize that you've selflessly dedicated most of your life to care for me. From the beginning when you were a young and struggling single mother to now where you support my dreams of a degree both on a monetary and emotional level. My advocacy and social work desires are no doubt inspired by you and your passion for a better world. While we may not agree on everything, out mutual belief that the world can be changed makes for wonderful discussions where you patiently listen to my opinions and always offer wisdom that causes me to think even more. I'm so grateful to have a wonderful ally in my quest to help humanity. You are a brilliant woman. Just brilliant.

Your commitment to becoming a better person is impressive. I don't know anyone else who can work full time, finish a Masters, and raise a family while being emotionally present for all those around her. Your energy is invigorating for everyone you meet. You are a sparkling person, and I can't believe that I am fortunate enough to have you in my life.

I know that not everyone is as fortunate to have someone like you. Someone who is available for every crisis. Someone who is open to drop by visits. Someone who puts others first and also knows how to care for herself. Someone who changes lives on a daily basis. Someone who is gentle, thoughtful, and well balanced. Someone who dedicates their lives to international peace. Someone who makes their own rules. Someone who is willing to live life to the fullest no matter what barriers present themselves. Someone who is able to love me for me regardless of what I choose; regardless of the mistakes I make. This is worth one's weight in gold. Or chocolate. Or shrimp pasta. Or, you know, anything that we love.

I know you are dedicated to losing weight and your developed physical strength is empowering for you. I am happy that you have found this transformation to be a blessing, but I want you to know that you are beautiful no matter what. I don't think you've heard this enough, but you are perfect. I hope you can internalize this truth one day.

This letter falls short to capture my love for you, but I know that we have an unspoken connection that will last for the rest of our lives. It brings tears to my eyes, and makes my heart feel like it might burst. And I hope that we do become world traveling companions like we plan to... I want to spend every moment I can together.

You are my best friend in the whole entire universe (just make sure you don't tell Him;)).

Love, love, love,
Me

  3. You have a beautiful mother. The two of you look exactly alike. Don't ever forget to tell her that you love her. I can't anymore...my mother passed away 7 years ago and I still regret that I never told her.
